We have reached the point in the season where games start to take on the “six-pointer” tag. The Tanners are hoping to reach the play-offs for a second season in a row, having finished 3rd last season. They reached the Play-Off Final before losing 1-3 to Marlow in front of 1,589 spectators. Former Arsenal midfielder Ian Selley is the man in charge having taken up the role at the start of the season. We are still in a good position, despite Saturday’s disappointing result against Rayners Lane, and we will be looking to bounce back with a positive result at Fetcham Grove. Leatherhead are in a rich vein of form, having won seven of their last nine league games. Their only defeat in that time coming against Farnham Town. They sit 2nd in the current form table with sixteen points, six points and six places above The Reds.
Last time out
Both sides were in action on Saturday. Leatherhead visited bottom of the table Badshot Lea and raced into a 3-0 lead after thirty minutes. Although their fourth didn’t arrive until second half injury-time the three points were well on there way back to Surrey by then. Rayners Lane made it two wins in four days at Honeycroft, following on from their victory in the Middlesex Senior Cup Final against Hanwell Town on Wednesday. Two goals in the first seven minutes of the second period saw the Lane race into a 4-1 lead, and despite a spirited final third it was a mountain too high to climb for The Reds.
Previously
We first met Leatherhead in February 1959 in a Corinthian League encounter. We won 3-1 at Fetcham Grove on that occasion, and in thirty-three meetings later we hold the upper hand with fourteen victories to thirteen. Last season the team from Surrey completed the double over us. 4-0 at Fetcham Grove in February, and of course, 3-2 in the opening game at the redeveloped Honeycroft in October 2023.
The ones to watch!
The current Leatherhead squad contains two players who represented The Reds last season. Anuar Ceesay and Rhys Murrell-Williamson made four and seven appearances respectively. Lukas Franzen-Jones (11 goals) and Ruben Bartlett-Antwi (10 goals) lead the way with twenty-one goals between them.
